Discovering the Taste of Japan – A Fun Review of Yakisoba and Snacks

Hello!
In this blog, I share my personal experiences and reviews of Japanese snacks and treats. Today, we’ll dive into the delightful world of Peyang Yakisoba Sauce Katsu. Along the way, I’ll also explain what yaki-soba and cup yakisoba are, giving you a taste of one of Japan’s most beloved comfort foods!

What is Yakisoba?

Yakisoba might sound like a Chinese dish, but it’s actually a Japanese original! It’s made by stir-frying Chinese-style noodles with ingredients like pork, cabbage, and bean sprouts, all coated in a sweet and savory sauce. You’ll find it served at summer festivals, school events, and food stalls all across Japan.

Yakisoba’s appeal also varies by region. In Kanto, the sauce is rich and flavorful, while in Kansai, salt-based yakisoba is popular. Whether at home or at a food stall, it remains one of Japan’s favorite B-grade gourmet foods!

What is Cup Yakisoba?

For those who want to enjoy yakisoba easily, cup yakisoba is a lifesaver. Just pour hot water over the noodles, wait for five minutes, drain the water, mix in the sauce, and it’s ready to eat! It’s the perfect go-to meal after a long day.

Brands like Peyang and U.F.O. offer a wide variety of cup yakisoba, including unique flavors like Indonesian-style mie goreng. While it tastes slightly different from regular yakisoba, cup yakisoba has a distinctive flavor that keeps you coming back—the kind of taste that makes you crave it out of nowhere!

What is Peyang?

Peyang is one of Japan’s most popular cup yakisoba brands. Its name combines “pair” and “young”, symbolizing the idea of young couples sharing a meal together.

Peyang was launched in 1975, pioneering the use of a square container and liquid sauce, setting a new standard for cup yakisoba. With its creative flavor line-ups, Peyang has become a beloved brand across Japan.

My Review of Peyang Yakisoba Sauce Katsu

Now, let’s get to the star of today’s review: Peyang Yakisoba Sauce Katsu! This snack is a bite-sized katsu (cutlet) coated with Peyang’s signature yakisoba sauce.

The first thing that will surprise you is how tiny these katsu pieces are. They’re barely the size of a fingertip, making me wonder, “Are these for babies?” (Haha!) But don’t be fooled by the size—each piece packs a punch!

As soon as you take a bite, the bold, savory flavor of Peyang’s sauce hits you. Unlike other snacks like Big Katsu, this one has a distinctive Peyang taste—less sweet and more intensely flavorful. It’s the kind of snack that you find yourself reaching for again and again without realizing it. Before you know it, you’ve eaten 10 pieces in one sitting!

The katsu pieces are so addictive that they’d pair well with a drink or even work as a crunchy topping for rice. They may be small, but they deliver big on flavor and have a strange charm that makes you crave more.

Peyang Yakisoba Sauce Katsu may be small, but it offers a rich, addictive taste that’s hard to resist. If you’re a fan of Peyang or love bold flavors, you’ll definitely enjoy this snack. Its unique take on yakisoba sauce makes it worth trying at least once.

In the future, I’ll be posting a more detailed review of cup yakisoba—so stay tuned for that!
